Acta musealia 2022/1-2:6-21 | DOI: 10.62317/amu.2022.001

The paper presents relatively recent finds of metal objects discovered in the south-west part of the Hostýn Hills. The set of objects consists mostly of metal items, some of which can be described as militaria and so called ‘Avar’ belt mountings. The importance of the find lies in the fact that the objects do not come from usual settlement localities but from a space, which witnesses use of the countryside in the early Middle Ages.

In the second half of the 19th century, the town of Valašské Meziříčí experienced a period of extensive development, which attracted rich or socially well-established families to settle there. Jaromír, the Count Bukuwka von Bukuwky (1845-1936), a retired commissioned cavalry officer of mounted infantry and a royal official, also moved there with his family and he soon started participating in the local cultural life. Together with his wife, Marie Agatha, Countess Bukuwka von Bukuwky (neé Stillfried von Rathenitz; 1845-1929) they became members of Museum Society and both contributed considerably towards its social rise. They also actively supported...

Prayer books, known as Keys to Heaven and Graft Gardens, by the German Roman- Catholic priest Martin from Kochem, which, in the 18th and the 19th centuries became the most popular and the most published catholic prayer books in the central Europe, were primarily aimed at women, which could in these everyday prayers find theological and psychological relief in their difficult lives. Life stories of heavy burden of the womenfolk of the local region were often deeply linked to everyday duties of a true Christian. This is witnessed by the traces of frequent use and wear and tear of these prayer books known as Keys to Heaven and Graft Gardens in the collections...

From the second half of the 18th century there is an evident and visible effort by the state to medicalise midwifery through education of new midwifes. It was not quite clear how these efforts were reflected in improved midwifery in the peripheral parts of the Czech lands. Maternal mortality in a given region can be used as a gauge. This study attempts, with a help of analyses of maternal mortality, to follow the success of medicalisation of midwifery in the region of former Rožnov jurisdiction district, which had been considered one of the most backward of the ethnographic regions of Wallachia.

Acta musealia 2022/1-2:138-162 | DOI: 10.62317/amu.2022.006

Based on the preserved archives sources as well as field research, the article maps the history of the stone sculpture workshop of František Zbořil in Staré Město near Uherské Hradiště. He was provably active between the years 1890 and 1918, after which his son and later his grandson, both of the same names, continued his work. The paper does not focus only on description of the known author’s work, but attempts to demonstrate which works the founder of the workshop was an author of and which were the works of his sons. At the same time it strives, based on the period information, to place the personality of Zbořil the eldest into a wider socio-economic...
